Can AI write a script that even comes close to the work of Douglas Adams?

Midjourney’s interpretation of Ford Prefect and Arthur Dent

The story so far…

So I’ve asked ChatGPT (using GPT-4) to create a new chapter of the radio program, as a starting point.

Again this is not about my creative wrangling of AI to create something good.

My goal is to tease out AI’s existing ‘creativity’ — not tolayer my own creativity into AI as a medium

Here is the result

Is it any good?

It’s definitely average. Maybe better than I thought it would be, but if this is to be performed — the humor and tone would have to come from the actors bringing their personality to the roles and adding something between the lines.

Could this work as a filler episode between better episodes? Maybe. But it still lacks the wit and social commentary we’d expect from Douglas Adams.

I did fine this line from Marvin the Paranoid Android though:

I can’t find any reference to this joke online. If so, I think it counts as maybe the only truly comedic line in the piece.

Our journey continues…

You’d really want to start with the script as a strong foundation for this exercise in seeing how far we can get with an episode — but I’ll resist the temptation to poke and prod at ChatGPT until we get a better script. This is what it has delivered to us, and so we press on!
